What is National ‘Unplug & Play’ Day?

‘Unplug & Play’ Day is part of a worldwide initiative to encourage families, schools, and communities to dedicate time to go screen-free and celebrate the enjoyment of hands on, playful and engaging activities in our ever-increasing digital age.

The movement is being spear-headed by the team at Mud Kitchen who are on the forefront of providing Australian schools, communities, and homes with play-based, screen-free, STEM learning resources to inspire wonder and creativity. Mud Kitchen is joined by a host of other organisations and community groups across Australia to promote this special day.

It is a happy talent to know how to play.

Why 'Unplug & Play'?

You don't have to ditch screens altogether to Unplug & Play...bring a bit of balance to your digital life with some real-world, old-school, face-to-face fun! There are tremendous benefits to stepping away from screens on occasion, not just for young, developing minds, but for everyone who wants to feel more energised, engaged, and playful...

point1

Remove the Digital Distraction

‘Unplug’ and focus on what matters! Make lasting memories and embrace face-to-face communication. Children of all ages benefit from the social cues of screen-free conversation with peers and adults alike, but it also aids in quickly growing their vocabulary and literacy skills.

point1

Play, don’t Pinterest!

We all love a good google search, or Pinterest binge. Often these are good jumping-off points, but try nurturing your own creativity and self-expression and be amazed at what you come up with! Brainstorm play ideas with your family or class, let imaginations run wild, and create something totally unique to your group.

point1

Improve your ZZZ’s

Tuck away screens well before bed. Switch up the routine and read a book, take turns telling tall tales, make up lullabies, create shadow puppets, or just relax and chat about the day that was. You’ll see an improvement in the quality and duration of your sleep, and feel more connected as a bonus.

point1

Less stress, more steps!

Put down the devices, tie up the laces, get outside and actively engage your mind, body and spirit for a happier wellbeing. Chalk hopscotch on the footpath, explore a new playground or bike path, create the ultimate 'loose parts' obstacle course, stomp in puddles, chase waves as they come on the sand, or just wander...

point1

Sync up by powering down

Time easily slips by down the digital rabbit hole! Go screen-free and find more minutes for catch-ups and play dates... discover time for star-gazing, kite-flying, biscuit-baking, or storytelling, and enjoy the minutes as well as the days!

whyimg

Time spent playing with children is never wasted.

Dawn Lantero

Play builds the kind of free-and-easy, try-it-out, do-it-yourself character that our future needs.
